Chicago Cubs sign 14-year MLB veteran to minor league contract
The Chicago Cubs’ battered bullpen is getting some relief of its own, as veteran reliever Liam Hendriks is joining the organization. According to Britt Ghiroli of The Athletic, the Cubs and Hendriks are finalizing a minor league contract.
Hendriks, 37, is a veteran right-hander of 14 major league seasons and has played with six different franchises. Hendriks’ time in the big leagues included three seasons with the Chicago White Sox (2021-23). During his time with the White Sox, Hendriks went 14-7 with a 2.76 ERA, recorded 76 saves in 132 appearances, and was a two-time All-Star.

The native Australian has not pitched in the big leagues this season, spending his time in the Minnesota Twins organization. The Twins released Hendriks on May 20. Hendriks appeared in 14 games with the Boston Red Sox last season until inflammation in his right hip at the end of May cost him the rest of the 2025 season.

Injuries to the bullpen prompted the Cubs to sign Hendriks, with four members from the bullpen on the injured list. Left-handers Jordan Wicks (left forearm, radial nerve irritation) and Caleb Thielbar (left hamstring strain) should be returning soon, as they’re on rehab assignments.
Right-hander Hunter Harvey’s (right triceps inflammation) setback on May 7 in his bullpen session is what really prompted this move. Harvey’s timeline for return is to be determined, per MLB.com.
Since he has not pitched this season, Hendriks will need time to build himself up in the minor leagues. The Cubs need pitching, more moves similar to signing Hendriks could be made to fill the innings manager Craig Counsell needs filled.
The Cubs will likely be one franchise in the market starting and relief depth at the trade deadline.
