Chicago Bears: Mayor sends stern statement on new stadium
Despite the NFL Stadium Committee telling the Chicago Bears that only the sites at Arlington Heights or Hammond, Indiana, were viable options for a new stadium, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson won’t leave alone the idea that the team will remain downtown.
Earlier this month, Johnson said he’d use his political leverage to try and keep the Illinois Senate from passing megaprojects legislation that would give the Bears tax breaks for the stadium at Arlington Heights.
The Bears want the Senate to add more amendments to the bill that passed the House, but there hasn’t been much progress on that front this month as the clock ticks for the spring session in Springfield.
In a statement on the Mayor’s X account, Johnson sent a stern message on the Bears’ plans to leave Chicago. He suggested state lawmakers should not give the Bears incentives to leave the city and that the team should stay in Chicago.
“There’s no good reason to incentivize the Bears to leave the top tourist destination in Illinois or to gift them property tax reprieve when they already don’t pay property taxes on a publicly-owned stadium,” Johnson wrote. “The Bears belong in downtown Chicago.”

The ship appears to have sailed from Lake Michigan on that front a long time ago. Arlington Heights is the only option for the Bears if they are to remain in Illinois.
As Illinois decides how much incentive to give the Bears for the project in Arlington Heights, the team has been actively working with state and local officials in Indiana for the project in the Northwest part of the state.
At one point, the Bears CEO/president Kevin Warren tried to make a deal happen in Chicago, but the team did not receive what they hoped for from the city.
Now, it’s too late for Chicago to keep the Bears, no matter how hard Johnson complains.
