MLB analyst names Chicago Cubs as potential suitor for Cy Young Winner
The past few weeks haven’t been too kind for the Chicago Cubs. Despite having two 10-game win streaks this season, the Cubs now find themselves looking up in the NL Central standings.
After suffering a 10-game losing streak, Chicago’s lead in the NL Central is gone. They are also battling injuries, mainly to the pitching staff which has caused some inconsistency with the staff early on this season. While the Cubs should get Matthew Boyd and Edward Cabrera back sooner than later, they could use another big arm.
But would they make a big trade for one? An MLB analyst believes they would be a potential suitor for a Cy Young winner at the trade deadline.
Would Chicago Cubs pursue Tarik Skubal?
The hottest name at the MLB Trade Deadline this Summer could be Detroit Tigers’ ace Tarik Skubal. While he’s currently on the Injured List, Skubal could be the prize at the deadline due to the Tigers not wanting to give him a big extension. The Tigers will certainly have a decision to make on Skubal’s future.
But if they move him, one MLB analyst believes the Cubs would be a potential suitor.
“My No. 1 team to trade for Skubal is the Cubs,” Jon Heyman said on Wednesday. “Certainly hitting is their No. 1 issue but they lost Cade Horton, obviously a No. 1 pitcher, their No. 1 pitcher. To me, that makes the most sense for a trade with Skubal. I’ve heard that they are team that has floated around a bit. Not going to say how much they have talked to the Tigers. Scott Harris used to be with the Cubs, so he certainly knows Jed Hoyer well, he knows their system probably better than most. Their system is pretty good.”
He also named Padres, Yankees, Dodgers, and Blue Jays as teams in order of likelihood.
With the Cubs likely being buyers at the deadline, they should have the pieces to get Skubal if they really want him. If they are in contention ahead of the deadline, a move like this can’t be ruled out. It will certainly be something to watch moving forward.
