White Sox have a disturbing new problem following thrilling win over Cubs

The vibes are great for the Chicago White Sox right now, as they just beat the Chicago Cubs two out of three courtesy of a walkoff three-run home run by Edgar Quero, of all people.

The White Sox are now two games over .500 for the first time since 2022, and they are proving more and more to be serious challengers in the AL Central. However, if Chicago wants to win the division, it will need to shore up some weak spots.

Like the catcher position, for example.

Yes, Quero did send the Cubs packing on Sunday, but that was his first home of the year, and he is slashing just .176/.264/.220 on the season. He has been a black hole in the White Sox’s lineup, and while Drew Romo does have four long balls since being called up, he is batting a paltry .184.

The hope was that Kyle Teel would re-join the club rather soon, but he just had a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury, complaining of knee soreness.

Chicago White Sox have a major problem despite the good vibes

There is no question Chicago is playing some fantastic baseball. It has won seven of its last eight games thanks to a surprisingly potent lineup that features three players who have already smashed double-figure home runs this season. In fact, the White Sox are second only to the New York Yankees in long balls.

Munetaka Murakami has been a revelation, Colson Montgomery is proving why the Sox made him a first-round pick in 2021 and Miguel Vargas has been mashing. But lineup depth has been a big problem for the Southsiders thus far, and it will continue to be an issue if Teel remains sidelined.

Quero definitely showed promise in 2025, slashing a respectable .268/.333/.356. Sure, the power left plenty to be desired, but the White Sox could live with Quero getting on base at a .333 clip. It’s certainly a heck of a lot better than what we’ve seen from him this year, and he has exhibited no signs of coming out of it (outside of one game against the Cubs).

So what will Chicago do if it turns out Teel will have to miss considerably more time? Will it just live with its current setup? Will it go out and make a trade?

While the team’s trio of boppers is nice, the White Sox probably can’t survive with having three or four reliable hitters (Sam Antonacci has also been really solid) and then a bunch of near-automatic with little to no pop in the rest of the lineup.

Chicago is certainly a fun story right now, but you have to wonder if the bubble will eventually burst.
