The Chicago White Sox have been one of the most surprising teams in the first few months of the season. Chicago has a ton of young players who have stepped up, but one has been surprising a lot of people in baseball. Let’s take a look at which player is showcasing his skills as one of the elite players at his position thus far.
Miguel Vargas is considered to be a top 10 third baseman this season

The trio of Ryan Phillips, Karl Rasmussen, and Tim Capurso curated a top 10 third baseman list for Sports Illustrated. There are some familiar names who pop up on these lists every year, but Miguel Vargas of the White Sox took the ninth spot. Below is the reasoning for the surprising decision:
“Track record plays a big role in these rankings, but sometimes you have to throw the methodology out the window in a special case. The roll Vargas is on in 2026 is exactly that. A 26-year-old who had never really found a role in the big leagues, the White Sox third baseman has exploded this season. He’s currently slashing .239/.375/.479 with nine home runs, 23 RBIs and a 139 wRC+, but his underlying metrics suggest he’s been even better. Vargas’s Statcast page is so red it looks like a crime scene. His xSLG (.540) xwOBA (.406) and chase rate (16.1%) are all among the best in baseball. He’s also barreling the ball 15.5% of the time, and his walk rate has jumped to 16.5%. Entering the season he’d produced 0.9 bWAR in his four-year career. He has already doubled that to 1.8. He’s an average defender at third, but his bat has woken up to get him on this list.”
Vargas has taken a massive step forward with his offensive production this season with Chicago. He has excellent command of the strike zone and is also tied for his career-high in stolen bases (6). While the defense is not excellent, he has only committed a pair of errors in more than 300 innings at the hot corner. The 26-year-old is making a case to keep the prospects in the minors as he is blossoming into a premier third baseman. Vargas can play multiple positions, but he is shining at third base. It will be intriguing to see if he can continue stepping up throughout the year.
