Bulls trade proposal features $100 million swap with Western Conference contender

The Chicago Bulls are entering a critical offseason in which they own expansive cap room as well as a pair of first-round draft picks, so their roster could look awfully different next year.

Not only that, but the Bulls have a new top executive in Bryson Graham, and it stands to reason that he may want to entirely reshape the roster to his liking. That means Josh Giddey could ultimately be on the move.

Giddey’s name has been floated in trade speculation for quite some time now, and the buzz has only grown since Graham took the job in Chicago. Giddey does not exactly seem like Graham’s type of player due to his defensive deficiencies, so it makes sense that Graham would try to trade the 23-year-old.

While Giddey has never made an All-Star team, he should certainly drum up plenty of interest around the NBA after averaging 17 points, 9.1 assists and eight rebounds per game this past season, and he is entering the second year of a very manageable four-year, $100 million contract.

So, where could Giddey land? Well, Bailey Bassett of ClutchPoints has pitched an intriguing destination: the Houston Rockets.

The Rockets could absolutely use a bona fide playmaker on their roster, so Giddey would certainly make sense in Houston.

“Because of that, center Alperen Sengun served as the team’s primary passer. While the big man is nicknamed Baby Jokic for a reason, it would probably be in Houston’s best interest if he were more of a secondary playmaker rather than the team’s leading assister. Trading for a pure point guard like Giddey would make a lot of sense, especially because it is unclear how VanVleet will look upon returning from a major injury,” Bassett wrote.

Bassett did not go into detail about what the return would look like for the Bulls, and because Houston already surrendered a bunch of its top assets in the Kevin Durant trade, finding common ground might prove difficult.

But if Graham is really just looking to shed Giddey’s money and start fresh, he might be willing to accept what would appear to be a rather light return. It’s also important to note that the Rockets do possess a pair of first-round draft picks in 2027.

It would not be the least bit surprising if Houston places a call to Chicago about Giddey. We’ll see if the two sides can find a match.
