Yohendrick Pinango breaking out after 2024 Cubs trade

Outfielder Yohendrick Pinango and shortstop Josh Rivera are two former Chicago Cubs prospects now playing in the Toronto Blue Jays organization after being traded for Nate Pearson at the 2024 deadline. Since then, the deal has taken a dramatic turn. Pearson was designated for assignment in 2025, Rivera has struggled at the Triple-A level, and Pinango is in the middle of a breakout campaign.

For some context, Pinango originally signed as an international free agent in 2018. Early in his professional career, he stood out for his contact ability and disciplined approach at the plate, though he was not known for producing much power. He climbed as high as the Cubs’ No. 14 prospect in 2021 before sliding down to No. 29 in the organization a year later.

After coming within inches of a World Series title, Toronto spent aggressively this offseason in hopes of making another deep postseason run. However, injuries have quickly derailed those plans and played a major role in the club’s disappointing start. The outfield, in particular, has been hit hard, most notably with Anthony Santander, who signed a five-year deal over the winter before later undergoing labral surgery.

That misfortune has opened the door for Pinango, who was called up and made his MLB debut on April 26. Since arriving in the majors, he has done nothing but produce offensively. Through his first 15 games, Pinango has collected 16 hits, including two doubles and a home run, while driving in seven runs.

Equally encouraging has been his approach at the plate, as Pinango has struck out just six times in his first 47 plate appearances, resulting in an excellent 12% strikeout rate, a skill that has consistently been part of his profile throughout the minor leagues. While he has yet to steal a base in the majors, he has shown some speed potential in the past, most notably stealing 27 bases during his first professional season in the Cubs organization before that total dipped to just six steals last year.

It is unrealistic to expect Pinango to continue producing at this pace long term, however making an impact at the major league level is never easy, especially for a player who was once viewed as more of a solid organizational prospect than a future everyday contributor. Even if some regression is inevitable, Pinango has already shown that his contact skills and mature approach at the plate can translate against big league pitching, giving the Blue Jays reason to be optimistic about his future role moving forward.
