WNBA team facing immediate backlash after Hailey Van Lith announcement
Hailey Van Lith is continuing her WNBA career in Connecticut after being let go by the Chicago Sky on Monday. The Connecticut Sun announced on Wednesday that they signed Van Lith on a waiver claim. Franchise officials declined to disclose contract details in accordance with team policy.
Chicago drafted the 5-foot-9 guard with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2025 first round. Van Lith struggled in her rookie campaign, shooting 33.9% from the field. An ankle injury also limited her to 29 games. Overall, she averaged 3.5 points and 1.6 assists per game last season.
Van Lith and former college teammate Angel Reese played together during the 2023–24 NCAA season. They helped the LSU Tigers reach the Elite Eight that year.
The duo reunited in Chicago last year. However, their time with the Sky ended when the team moved on from both players. Reese was traded by Chicago to the Atlanta Dream in April.
Connecticut Sun welcome Hailey Van Lith, but Instagram photo sparks backlash
On Wednesday, the Sun welcomed the 24-year-old guard by posting her photo on their official Instagram account.
“Welcome to Connecticut, Hailey 
️,” the team wrote in the caption. “The Connecticut Sun has been awarded Hailey Van Lith on a waiver claim.”

However, the photo still shows Van Lith wearing her Sky jersey, which drew backlash from the folks on social media.
“We got AI and they ain’t do a jersey swap. SMH,” a fan commented.
“Feel like a quick photoshop in a Connecticut jersey would’ve gone far here 😂,” another user wrote.
“Now y’all know y’all coulda AI’d a Sun jersey on her 😂,” a supporter said.
“No photoshop?” another comment read.
“Could have at least put her in a sun jersey at the bare minimum lmao,” a viewer posted.
“Y’all could’ve photoshopped or used a different picture,” another demanded.
Van Lith had a standout college career at Louisville, LSU, and TCU. She is the first player in NCAA history to lead three different schools to the Elite Eight.
Van Lith now joins a roster that includes talented young players such as Aneesah Morrow and Aaliyah Edwards. She is also teaming up with veterans like Brittney Griner, who joined the team as a free agent in April. Connecticut aims to build a roster of young talent and veterans whose determination and skill stand out.
The Sun will begin their 2026 WNBA regular season at home on May 10 against the Seattle Storm at Mohegan Sun Arena.
