Bears faces a possible high‑stakes return of Micah Parsons
Green Bay Packers star pass rusher Micah Parsons offered the most detailed update yet on his recovery from the torn ACL he suffered late last season. His return date could have huge ramifications on the longest rivalry in the NFL between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears.
Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Parsons confirmed he will not return from his torn ACL injury until at least mid-October. According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, he is five months into his ACL rehab and still has four months remaining. This is due to the Packers’ strict nine‑month return‑to‑play policy for major knee injuries.
Parsons also revealed that his surgery included meniscus repair, which typically slows the early stages of recovery and reinforces the Packers’ conservative approach. Therefore, he will likely start the upcoming season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. This means he will automatically miss at least 4 games. Since he had surgery on December 29th, Parsons will not be eligible to be evaluated for clearance until September 29th.
So, how does this impact the Bears?
The Packers host the Chicago Bears in Week 5(October 11th), just 12 days after Parsons’ earliest possible clearance date. He would be eligible to return to practice ahead of the Bears game. After the player serves the mandatory 4-game absence, a 21-day clock begins. That means he will have a three-week window in which they can practice without being added to the active roster. But the team can also activate the player to the 53-man roster at any point during these 21 days.
The Packers could activate Parsons ahead of the big divisional showdown in Lambeau Field if his health checks out.
What does this mean for the Bears?
The Packers could play mind games by leaking information about his return to practice and getting activated for this game. Head coach Ben Johnson must prepare for all scenarios and will have his work cut out.
The Bears have struggled with first‑half rhythm in all three of their meetings with the Packers last season. However, facing a juiced-up Lambeau crowd and a returning superstar is not an ideal environment to play from behind. To take off pressure, quarterback Caleb Williams must improve his completion percentage by hitting easy passes. This is something head coach Ben Johnson wants Williams to improve this year.
One major concern for Johnson could be his offensive line. The Bears are having problems at left tackle after Ozzy Trapilo ruptured his patellar tendon during the team’s playoff victory over the Packers. His status for the upcoming season remains uncertain. No matter who is playing left tackle for the Bears, you can bet the Packers will deploy him situationally, even if he is not yet at 100%.
While his return would elevate this rivalry into must‑watch territory nationally, the Bears are hoping Parsons will not be making his 2026 debut against them.
