Chicago Cubs: Pete Crow-Armstrong gets shout-out as team jumps back into top-10 in MLB power rankings
The Chicago Cubs are flying high, riding a four-game winning streak, having swept all four games of their series on the road against the New York Mets. Now 44-37 on the season, the Cubs travel north on I-94 to take on the Milwaukee Brewers, who sit in first place in the National League Central Division. They themselves are coming off of a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds.
While the Cubs went through a horrible month-long stretch of absolutely abysmal baseball, they have been more consistent as of late. Because of this, they have jumped back into the top-10 of ESPN’s MLB Power Rankings.
Pete Crow-Armstrong highlighted as Chicago Cubs take seventh in MLB Power Rankings
Last week, ESPN had dropped the Cubs all the way down to 11th in their power rankings. This week, though, they are back inside the top-10, being ranked seventh by their MLB experts:
“There might not be a better position player in baseball than Pete Crow-Armstrong when he’s rolling. And after a terrible start to the season at the plate, PCA is rolling again. The polarizing center fielder has been white hot in June with 10 home runs and a .410/.474/.867 slash line in 20 games.
“His 4.8 fWAR, also boosted by elite defense and baserunning, is second in the majors. And yet the Cubs’ 16-25 record since May 9 is the fourth-worst in the majors.”
As one can see, Pete Crow-Armstrong is the recipient of a special highlight in these rankings. Indeed, he has been on fire during the month of June, and that hot streak has him hitting .287/.367/.521 with 17 home runs, 45 RBI, and 18 stolen bases.
Imagine what his stats would look like if he did not get off to such a slow start.
Whether or not Chicago has truly turned a corner remains to be seen. The Mets are not scaring anyone, and while the Cubs are 7-0 against them this year, they are just 37-37 against everyone else.
The weekend series in Milwaukee will do a lot to show everyone how Chicago really stacks up against the better teams in baseball.
