Stephanie White gets honest on unrealistic expectations on Indiana Fever
Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White addressed unrealistic expectations after her team secured its first win of the 2026 Commissioner’s Cup. The Fever earned an 83-71 victory over the Atlanta Dream on Thursday.
Indiana captured the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup last year by defeating the Minnesota Lynx 74-59. It marked the first such title in franchise history.
With their opening victory over Atlanta, the Fever again showed strong form in the Commissioner’s Cup tournament. In a media conference after the game, reporters asked White why Indiana continues to perform well in the competition.
The coach, however, rejected the idea that there is something special about the Commissioner’s Cup that causes the team to play well.

White also pushed back on the notion that Indiana’s early success this season means it is already a finished product. She said the team is still a work in progress.
“We’re not there by any means, but it’s nine games in,” White told reporters. “We have some new pieces. We have some new pieces in the starting lineup. We have some new pieces that are coming off the bench, that are getting heavy minutes, that are in the rotation.”
The coach also acknowledged that many observers expected quick results from the revamped roster. However, she noted that Indiana is still building chemistry as players adjust to new roles.
“It doesn’t happen immediately,” White said. “I think every time we have an opportunity to step on the floor and grow, just as much as from an X’s and O’s standpoint, just in terms of connectivity, playing for each other, what it means to put the team before yourself, what it means to go through a little bit of adversity and find some resilience.”
“It’s a growth process. I know everybody wants it to happen right away. It’s just not realistic.”
Indiana is chasing a first-ever back-to-back Commissioner’s Cup titles. They play a total of six games against teams in the Eastern Conference. The top team from each conference will then battle in the final on June 30 for the trophy and a $500,000 prize pool.
