White Sox named trade destination for aggravated young pitcher

The Chicago White Sox could definitely stand to bolster their starting rotation, as it certainly hasn’t been great beyond Davis Martin and Sean Burke. The question is, will the White Sox actually make a move to buy by the trade deadline?

Considering Chicago is sitting at 32-28 and firmly in contention in the AL Central, the White Sox might decide to add some more pieces before Aug. 3, even with slugger Munetaka Murakami sidelined for the next month-plus.

It would also largely benefit the South Siders to acquire some good, young players under team control for the foreseeable future. That way, not only can Chicago make more of a push this season, but it will have more ammunition for the years to come, as well.

Of course, it’s not always easy to land strong cost-controlled talent, so the White Sox will have a difficult road ahead of them in that regard.

However, Noah Phalen of Southside Showdown has identified a very compelling potential target for the squad: Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Carmen Mlodzinski.

It has certainly been an interesting ride for Mlodzinski, who has bounced back and forth between the starting rotation and the bullpen in Pittsburgh.

But after Mlodzinski made nine starts this season, he was asked by the Pirates to head back to the bullpen following the return of Jared Jones. Mlodzinski refused, resulting in Pittsburgh placing him on the restricted list. He was then activated from the list on Monday.

Trade rumors are sure to ensue, and Phalen was out ahead of it.

“Should his next steps involve requesting a trade out of Pittsburgh, I think the White Sox should be interesting. Mlodzinski is a 27 year-old with a first-round track record. He features a six-pitch mix, but his curveball and sweeper are his primary strengths,” Phalen wrote.

Mlodzinski has pitched to the tune of a 3.76 ERA this season, allowing 58 hits while registering 46 strikeouts over 55 innings of work. The 1.418 WHIP is certainly concerning, but the 27-year-old has managed to limit the damage.

Since entering the big leagues in 2023, Mlodzinski owns a 3.37 ERA and 3.44 FIP, so he has been impressive in spite of his lack of overpowering stuff.

We’ll see if the White Sox try and make a move for the right-hander if he becomes available.
