Chicago Cubs announce roster move prior to game vs Cardinals
The Chicago Cubs are 61-46 on the season and, frankly, it is nothing short of a miracle that they are in the position in which they find themselves. At one point during the year, they had an entire pitching staff’s worth of pitchers (13 players) on the injured list with various injuries.
Some of these, such as Cade Horton, are out of the year while others have been on and off the injured list with differing ailments.
Manager Craig Counsell is not perfect, but the way he has been able to manage this banged up pitching staff is undeniably impressive. That being said, it is apparently obvious that they are running out of options.
The Chicago Cubs have recalled Jake Woodford
Over the course of the season, Chicago has been forced to utilize a variety of journeymen in an effort to keep their pitching staff both rested and, well, staffed. Among these was Jake Woodford, who was designated for assignment by the Milwaukee Brewers earlier this year.
In his first stint with the Cubs, Woodford had a 13.50 ERA after giving up three runs in his only appearance. He was shortly after designated for assignment by Chicago, but went unclaimed and sent to Triple-A Iowa.

Prior to being DFA’d by the Brewers, Woodford was 1-0 with a 6.94 ERA in 16 appearances. For his MLB career, he is 11-17 with a 5.31 ERA.
As seen above, Andrew Wantz has now been designated for assignment by Chicago. He appeared in one game for the Cubs after being acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays. He gave up one run in two innings of work.
