Cubs predicted to break the bank in questionable trade for pitcher

Craig Counsell, Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs absolutely need starting pitching, and while they have already acquired David Peterson, they are expected to add at least one other impactful arm by the MLB trade deadline.

The question is, just how much would the Cubs be willing to surrender in terms of prospect capital to get the rotation help they need?

While Detroit Tigers superstar Tarik Skubal is probably out of the question, there should be some other compelling pitchers available, although the field may be shrinking right now with so many teams still in playoff contention.

Surely, Chicago will be able to find someone. After all, it’s pretty much a must for the Cubs to bring in another starter if they want to have any chance of embarking on a sustained playoff run. Their pitching staff has been a complete mess this season, and there is almost no way they are winning a World Series as currently constructed.

Tim Boyle of FanSided has actually pitched an idea that would see the Cubbies land Baltimore Orioles left-hander Trevor Rodgers, but he has them paying a hefty price to do so.

Boyle’s proposal has the Cubs sending infielder Pedro Ramirez as well as pitchers Brooks Caple and Dawson Netz to the Orioles in exchange for Rogers, which would represent one heck of a package for Baltimore.

“Rogers’ trade value will be determined largely by how he does in his final starts before the Aug. 3 trade deadline. The Orioles should re-group rather than push for something that won’t happen: a championship run. Ramirez gives them an immediate big-league infielder to add to their mix while Caple becomes an interesting arm tossed into their system. Netz can be considered the ‘throw-in,’ but with such good results in Double-A this year, he’s a significant enough piece to satisfy,” Boyle wrote.

Rogers has logged a 4.70 ERA through 16 starts this season, allowing 82 hits while registering 65 strikeouts over 84.1 innings of work. Last year, the southpaw posted a 1.81 ERA and 0.903 WHIP across 18 starts, and he does have an All-Star appearance under his belt back when he was with the Miami Marlins in 2021.

But is Rogers really good enough for Chicago to give up Ramirez and Caples in the same deal?

The 28-year-old owns a lifetime 3.95 ERA, 3.66 FIP and 1.302 WHIP, so he’s been decent, but he has also been wildly inconsistent and has dealt with his fair share of injuries issues throughout the course of his career, which began in 2020.

Rogers could comprise a decent addition for the Cubs, but that price is definitely a bit scary.
