Former Mets GM admits he ‘misjudged’ Pete Crow-Armstrong with trade

With the MLB Trade Deadline looming, it’s a crucial time for general managers. While they look to improve their team by making a big splash or by acquiring prospects, mistakes can still be made.

Back in 2021, the Chicago Cubs were in a tough spot and opted to sell off their core who brought them a World Series. While it was hard for some fans to take, the Cubs did land a star in one of those trades. Chicago acquired Pete Crow-Armstrong from the New York Mets in a deal that revolved around Javier Baez. Since then, Crow-Armstrong has developed into one of the best outfielders. Meanwhile, Baez is now with the Detroit Tigers.

It’s a move that haunts the New York Mets and former general manager Zack Scott is now opening up about it, admitting a mistake.

Earlier in the week, Scott talked about the decision to trade Crow-Armstrong now that he’s not with the Mets anymore. He admitted he misjudged Crow-Armstrong and that it was not a deal he felt good about doing for the long term.

“When you look back, it’s easy to say that was a bad trade long term,” Scott said. “And I’d say this, at the time, it’s certainly not a deal you feel good about doing long term.”

He also revealed that there was some bias in the decision as well. Scott was with the Boston Red Sox from 2004-2020 and in the 2020 draft, the Red Sox did not like Crow-Armstrong. He was drafted 19th overall.

That played a role in also trading him via MLB.com:

Scott said part of the reasoning for including Crow-Armstrong in the trade was a bias coming from his background working in the Red Sox front office. He said they didn’t like Crow-Armstrong in the 2020 Draft — when the outfielder went 19th overall. Furthermore, Crow-Armstrong was rated as the fifth-best prospect in the Mets’ system, behind the likes of Francisco Alvarez, Ronny Mauricio, Allan and Brett Baty.

The Cubs initially targeted Matt Allan, the No. 3 Mets’ prospect in 2021. Instead, the Mets decided to send Crow-Armstrong. It worked out in the long term for the Cubs as it stands.
