Chicago Bears’ George McCaskey has sour update on stadium

NFL: Chicago Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus Press Conference

The Chicago Bears are set to play their first preseason game on Saturday at Soldier Field.

It looks like the Bears will play games at Soldier Field for the foreseeable future as plans for the new stadium either in Arlington Heights or Hammond, Indiana have not made much progress since the spring.

Earlier in the spring, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suggested the Bears needed to make a plan to move to either the Arlington Heights or Hammond in haste. Chicago was expected to make a decision by the summer. As of August, the Bears have not decided.

During an interview with Patrick Fazio of NBC Chicago, Bears chairman George McCaskey provided an update on the new stadium project.

“We’re doing some due diligence on a second site in Hammond,” McCaskey said. “I think (CEO) Kevin (Warren) and I will have more to report in the coming days.”

In the past, days have turned into weeks, turning into months, turning into years.

The bad news from McCaskey’s update is that he confirmed that nothing new was going on in Arlington Heights. Illinois has not passed any meaningful legislation to aid the Bears on the stadium project, and there has been no emergency session to pass a bill.

The NFL will eventually want an answer from the Bears. At this point, the team is making more progress in Northwest Indiana than in Arlington Heights or in Chicago.

In June, Indiana Governor Mike Braun said his state was close to making a deal with the Bears.

“I think we’re in the red zone,” said Braun. “In real estate, like I told you before, you don’t count it as a done deal until you ink. This is probably the most important place we’ve been to date, and it takes a lot of the uncertainty out of it. It doesn’t mean there isn’t some left, but hey, we got to this point.”

Maybe the Bears can craft a deal with Illinois legislators to remain in the state. But right now, Indiana is making more of an effort to get the team.
