Roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz, making freedom of navigation in the waterway a high priority. Semi-official Iranian media outlets reported localized explosions, and the IRGC subsequently confirmed that several fighters and citizens were killed or injured during the operation. Iranian state media announced that the Revolutionary Guards have strongly condemned the strike as a violation of regional stability and have officially vowed to respond with retaliatory actions.
The U.S. military recently concluded operations to clear previous sea mines from international shipping routes in the area, highlighting the ongoing volatility and high stakes surrounding the oil chokepoint.
