Chicago Bears HC Ben Johnson doesn’t seem happy with OL’s performance

Ben Johnson, Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears have a lot to clean up before they travel to play the Cincinnati Bengals next week.

The Bears will have a joint practice with the Bengals next week, so it’s unclear if Chicago’s starters will play in its preseason game on Saturday. But the joint practices will be telling about what the offensive line is looking like before the regular season.

During his postgame news conference, Bears head coach Ben Johnson seemed unhappy with the offensive line for their play against the Cleveland Browns. He didn’t want to commit to a starting left tackle, noting quarterback Tyson Bagent was sacked twice. One sack was credited to left tackle Jedrick Wills, who alternated with Kiran Amegadjie.

“I think that’s a hard one for me to assess right now,” Johnson said of the left tackle position. “Sometimes that trench play, you have to go ahead and take a look at the lens from behind and really be able to take a look at it.

“But, as a whole, I would say the offensive line – I felt like our quarterback got hit more than I would like. (QB) Tyson (Bagent) certainly did in the first half. And in the second half, we still felt some pressures there on Case and Miller. So, we’ll look at why that was the case.”

More News: Bears made big decision on Caleb Williams for Browns preseason game

The running game was a disaster for Chicago, though to be fair, D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai didn’t play. The Bears rushed 21 times for 82 yards. Coleman Bennett scored the Bears’ only rushing touchdown of the game.

Johnson credited the Browns defense, but said the running game was “spotty” on Saturday.

“Then running game-wise was a little bit spotty as well. So, different style,” Johnson said. “The defense certainly attributes to that. Their front is coming off the ball, and they make it very difficult for one-on-one blocks and you have to be very specific with your angles and all that.

“And so, there’s a back and forth there in the running game as well. So, hard to say a whole lot about left tackle quite yet.”

With questions at left tackle, it’s a good thing the Bears chose to sit Caleb Williams on Saturday.
