Chicago Cubs: 2 pitchers team can acquire after missing out on Tarik Skubal
The Chicago Cubs are 63-48 on the season as the MLB trade deadline quickly approaches. Last night, as the Cubs were wrapping up yet another win, the Los Angeles Dodgers made the move every other contending team wanted to make: acquiring two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal.
Chicago, of course, is in desperate need of pitching depth. This is true for their starting rotation and bullpen, as many players have found themselves on the injured list this season.
Skubal would have been the Golden Goose for Chicago, but there are still multiple arms still available the Cubs could pursue.
The Chicago Cubs could still pursue Reid Detmers and Emerson Hancock
Bleacher Report posted an article on Sunday morning that listed two trades that each contending team could make following Skubal landing in Los Angeles.
Unsurprisingly, their ideas for Chicago consisted of two pitchers.
Reid Detmers
One of the pitchers that has been linked to the Cubs for weeks has been Los Angeles Angeles starter Reid Detmers. Of this latest link, BR wrote:
“After missing out on Skubal, Detmers is probably the next-best starter the Cubs can acquire. Even if he only has a 4.03 ERA, he’s fanned 145 batters in 125.0 innings and is working on a career-low walk rate to boot.
“The other appeal with Detmers is that he’s under club control through 2028. That could make his price tag similar to Skubal’s, but the Cubs could see the two additional chances to get it right as more worth the risk.”
As mentioned above, Detmers is under club control through the 2028 season. This makes his price rather high, and if the Cubs’ prospects were not going enough to get Skubal on an expiring deal, they may not be good enough to get Detmers, who is 3-7 with a 4.03 ERA this year.
Emerson Hancock
Seattle Mariners pitcher Emerson Hancock is under club control even longer than Detmers, and BR believes Chicago should pull the trigger and try to get some long-term help:
“The best available starter after Detmers is where thorny debates begin, but Hancock is one of the only ones who comes with four additional years of club control after 2026. And dare we say he’s underrated?
“Even away from T-Mobile Park, he has a 3.63 ERA. Let that be a lesson that lots of strikes, mid-90s velocity and a nasty sweeper make for a recipe that doesn’t need a big outfield and a marine layer to succeed.”
In 20 starts this season, Hancock is 6-5 with a 3.26 ERA.
