Could the Chicago Cubs also be in the market for another bat by trade deadline?
The Chicago Cubs are currently fourteen games above the .500 mark and four games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the top NL Wild Card spot.

But the team does have some serious holes to fill.
All of the fan and media attention has been directed towards the need to fortify a pitching staff absolutely besieged by injury this season. The strained starting rotation has rightfully garnered greater focus as it looks to overcome the loss of Cade Horton to Tommy John surgery, the recovery setback of Justin Steele, the release of veteran Jameson Taillon, and the current IL stint of Edward Cabrera.
It’s widely believed that the Cubs will be aggressive in their pursuit of a front-of-rotation starting pitcher by the August 3 MLB trade deadline. There’s also some good intel that says the team is simultaneously pursuing a back-of-bullpen closer-capable reliever.
But could Chicago also be in the market for a bat by the deadline?

One name has been tossed about by at least a couple of analysts as an ideal fit to help fortify the Cubs offense ahead of a hopeful postseason run—Lane Thomas.
The Kansas City Royals’ right-handed hitting outfielder is headed to free agency in the offseason and is by no means a marquee player, but he’s been good and solid for a good amount of time and would help give the Cubs some bench and outfield versatility. As a non-star rental, he’d also come at a very affordable price.
Per Tony Andracki of Bleacher Nation:
“Thomas would be a perfect fit — a 30-year-old veteran who is a free agent at the end of the season and on a team (Royals) that is firmly out of the playoff race.
His splits this year are relatively even, but over his career, Thomas has mashed against lefties (.289 AVG, .848 OPS).
The cost to acquire him shouldn’t be exorbitant and would immediately strengthen the Cubs’ depth in both the outfield and from the right side of the plate.
The Cubs could then play the matchups with Conforto, Thomas and Shaw in the DH spot.”
A “flier-type prospect” in return

Per Paul Niemiec of North Side Baseball:
“The Royals are firmly in seller mode and will look to move anything that won’t be part of their future. The former Cardinal is on a cheap one-year deal and should not take more than a flier-type prospect to acquire. Although Thomas has played only center and right field this season, he’s been worth 3 DRS in right and has a top-tier arm. He has a .799 OPS against lefties and would fit well in the bottom half of the Cubs lineup.”
Thomas is certainly a name worth considering and he profiles as a bigger contributor right now than someone like Justin Dean or Kevin Alcantara, who may be dangled as trade bait for pitching.
