Indiana Fever make historic decision amid WNBA season

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The Indiana Fever are on a roll, winning five consecutive games and moving up to fourth in the WNBA standings. They started the season by splitting their first 10 games but now hold a record of 19-10. However, the team could make some moves, including historic ones, ahead of the trade deadline.

Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston are performing as expected. The three-headed monster has powered Indiana to impressive wins, and the three All-Stars have maintained consistency. One area of concern is bench scoring, which the team could address with the addition of one or two players.

Some big names are rumored to be on the trade block, while free agents and players from different leagues could join the team. The Fever aim for a deeper postseason run after exiting in the second round in 2025.

Chicago Sky rival and Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) talks to Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell (0) during the first half during game two of the first round of the 2024 WNBA Playoffs at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Indiana Fever sign Upshot League star Michelle Onyiah

Indiana made history again on Friday, not for its on-court performance this time. The Athletic’s Annie Costabile reported that the team signed Michelle Onyiah to a developmental contract. She is the first player from the Upshot League to secure a WNBA deal.

“NEWS: The Indiana Fever have signed forward Michelle Onyiah to a developmental contract, making her the first player from the UPSHOT league signed to a WNBA contract,” Costabile wrote on X. “She was a member of UPSHOT’s Charlotte Crown team.”

Onyiah, a 6-foot-3 forward, led the league with 1.1 blocks and ranked third in rebounds with 6.9 per game. She also averaged 9.6 points for the Charlotte Crown. Onyiah has a chance to showcase her skill set on the biggest stage of women’s basketball.

Andy Kaufmann, Mark Walsh and Donna Orender founded the Upshot League, which played its inaugural season this year. Former WNBA president Donna Orender serves as its commissioner. The league has four founding teams but plans to add more in the upcoming years.
