Knee-Jerk Reactions: Ravens Ink Zay Flowers to Contract Extension

The Ravens announced on Tuesday that they have signed WR Zay Flowers to a contract extension.

So, a 4-yr extension on the 2 yrs remaining on his deal will keep Zay under contract for 6 yrs. He was due $2.664M in 2026 & $27.298M in 2027, so adding the $140M in new money for the extension means the total deal is $169.962M over 6 yrs ($28.327M/yr). https://t.co/ykq1gHj13D

The fact that it’s an extension that makes the entirety of the contract a six-year deal with an AAV under $30 million makes this a no-brainer to me.

Flowers is not only the most consistent receiver on this roster, but also its most explosive, so his value is immense. Being buddies with the franchise quarterback is extra credit when you take into consideration the franchise is trying to get Lamar Jackson locked in long-term, as well.

This is a smart signing that puts a stamp on Flowers as a cornerstone member of the franchise going forward, and he has shown the work ethic, talent and downright good-citizenship to make this an extension that exemplifies what the Ravens say they want to be.

The two biggest contract concerns for the Ravens entering 2026 centered around Lamar Jackson and Zay Flowers. Flowers is without question on the trajectory to go down as the Ravens best receiver, for a franchise that struggled for years to find one. Flowers has been worth every penny, outside of a few costly blunders. He’s surpassed 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons, as well as earning two Pro Bowl nods in the process.

The deal keeps him locked up for six years, which has to be a good sign regarding a Lamar extension, seeing how close the two are. At over $28m a year, it’s without a doubt a home run signing, if Flowers continues to build on years past. For a franchise that spent years trying to find Lamar Jackson a top tier receiver, Zay Flowers’ payday seems like the cherry on top for their home run 2022 first round pick.

Well, the Baltimore Ravens finally committed to a first round draft pick wide receiver that panned out and became a staple of the offense. Zay flowers is A consistent playmaker. He’s a thousand-yard receiver in multiple seasons. The Ravens don’t see that come around a lot. How many times did fans beg for a receiver in the NFL Draft to either come up with a Breshad Perriman or ignore the position all together?

Flowers is getting overpaid. He is not a Justin Jefferson. He is not a Ja’Marr Chase. He is getting elite money for being right at the border of being elite and very good.

I think the market dictates that overpay. The longer you wait to make a deal with Flowers, the bigger the deal gets because the market only grows bigger for these big name wide receivers. Every contract is a precedent and a level to beat. You cannot say you are all in on Lamar Jackson and the future you want to build with him, and then not commit to his favorite wide receiver. This is the best deal the team was going to get.

There’s not much more to say about it. It had to get done, And the Ravens did not drag it out.

If i were grading this deal, i would give it a B-.

Zay is a very good player. He has a good rapport with Lamar. He has been pretty durable. He can play multiple WR spots.

Is this an overpay?  Yes, i think so. He is a very good WR but he is not an elite one and while he’s not getting the top WR money per year, his contract is still well within the top 10.  Now, that won’t last long and this could be seen as a bargain in a few years but i still think it’s a tad high.  I feel he should be more in the 27-30M per year area.

That said, he’s productive, doesn’t cause problems, is well liked and can do a lot of things well.

He also has to be better at ball protection, especially in big situations.

This is an awesome deal for the ravens and for Zay Flowers. I don’t really have much else to say; they paid a fair amount and got a player locked up who is in competition to be the best receiver ever drafted by the team. I would call that a good day.

We’ve been hearing a lot of chatter lately, especially from Jeff Zrebeic, that this deal should be coming any day. I think this is exactly the kind of deal the Ravens make and fits the right-player-right-price motto. At $35 million a year it’s less than Jaxon Smith-Njigba‘s $42.5 million per year and getting out ahead of it with two years left on the rookie contract was a smart move. Zay Flowers has been far and away the best receiver the Ravens have ever drafted and the Ravens would rather pay a homegrown player than a high-priced free agent. While Flowers hasn’t been perfect and has had his fair share of blunders in critical moments, he’s still a young ascending player with an extremely high upside.

Eric DeCosta has made another great move for a fair price.
