Notre Dame freshman RB has coaching staff on alert

Notre Dame running back Jonaz Walton

No running back room in the country was more affected than Notre Dame after losing Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price to the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

The Irish are expected to use junior running back Aneyas Williams as the lead back, redshirt freshman Nolan James Jr. and redshirt sophomore Kedren Young in the rotation.

Notre Dame brought in two freshman running backs in its 2027 class, Javian Osborne and Jonaz Walton.

Brad Crawford of CBS Sports named Walton as one of the early risers in training camp. The Irish are high on the young back, and the team is expected to forgo the redshirt and give him a chance to eat snaps this season.

More News: Notre Dame sent serious warning for season finale

“Given the wealth of talent second-year Fighting Irish assistant Ja’Juan Seider has helped develop at running back in recent seasons, his opinion carries weight,” Crawford wrote. “And glowing reviews of this freshman have staying power. Seider sees no redshirt coming for Walton, given the 5-for-5 ruling and the splash he’s already making during camp.

“Aneyas Williams will start this season, but given the success Seider’s had with the duo of Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price last season and Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen at Penn State, there’s a chance this offense moves Walton into the mix with Williams, Nolan James, and Kedron Young early.”

The run game was crucial for the Irish last season. The offense rushed for 2,441 yards and 38 touchdowns. Love led the team with 1,372 yards and 18 touchdowns during his campaign to become a Heisman Trophy finalist.

Williams ran for 224 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 6.3 yards per rush on 24 carries. He should be a solid successor at running back.

However, James struggled last season, rushing 14 times for 37 yards, averaging just 2.6 yards per rush.

Walton could have a chance to grow into a bigger role for the offense if he continues his momentum into the regular season.
