Chicago Bears HC Ben Johnson made comment Matt LaFleur might notice
In the third quarter, D’Andre Swift made a play he’d regret, fumbling the football at the Chicago Bears’ 28-yard line that resulted in the New York Jets cutting the lead to 13-6 via a Jason Sanders field goal.
Running back Kyle Monangai, who had the hot hand on Sunday, was given the opportunity to handle rushing duties on the next drive that would end in him in the end zone after a five-yard touchdown run.
The Bears wouldn’t go back to Swift for the rest of the game, opting to let Monangai and Roschon Johnson do the rest of the heavy lifting.
On Monday, Bears head coach Ben Johnson denied benching Swift, saying the running back needed to have a short memory.
“We all have to have short memories,” Johnson said, via Sean Hammond of the Chicago Tribune.
Johnson’s comments didn’t match his actions on Sunday, but he made sure not to undermine one of his better players to the media, keeping Swift’s confidence high before playing the Green Bay Packers in Week 5.
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur took the opposite approach on Sunday. He was frustrated with Kaleb Johnson and MarShawn Lloyd fumbling in Sunday’s 17-14 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. (Johnson’s fumble was recovered by Tampa Bay.)
LaFleur told reporters on Sunday that he’d bench players with fumbling problems.
“I think a great teacher’s the bench,” LaFleur said. “If guys don’t start holding onto the ball, they’re gonna be sitting on the bench.”
The two head coaches are taking a different approach to motivate their players before playing in Green Bay on Sunday.
In the last two contests, Johnson has gotten the better of LaFleur. Johnson’s team is ascending; LaFleur’s team is 2-2 but has a lot of problems to fix on a team that still doesn’t have Josh Jacobs or Micah Parsons.
The rivalry between LaFleur and Johnson has gotten even more real since the Bears came back to beat the Packers in the Division Round.
The coach with the best approach should win Sunday’s game.
