Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham

The Indiana Fever face big decisions on the future of some of their players. One of them is Sophie Cunningham, who will enter unrestricted free agency. General manager Amber Cox addressed the situation during the team’s exit interviews.

Cunningham and Indiana were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Las Vegas Aces. They forced a winner-take-all Game 3 on Oct. 1 but failed to dethrone the defending champions, losing 94-83 at Michelob ULTRA Arena. She finished with only five points and two rebounds.

Kelsey Mitchell scored a team-high 23 points on an inefficient 7-of-23 shooting. Aliyah Boston backed her with 19 points, 10 rebounds and three assists, while Caitlin Clark also struggled from the field. She recorded 18 points on 6-of-18 attempts, with four assists and three three-pointers.

Indiana Fever: Amber Cox discusses Sophie Cunningham’s future

Cox highlighted what Cunningham brings to the Fever. She added that she looks forward to discussing a potential new contract but emphasized that it’s still early days in the offseason.

“Sophie’s had two really productive years for us in terms of shooting the basketball,” Cox said. “She is a really solid leader in the locker room, a great connector. You know, she brings levity, but also brings a lot of experience. She’s serious and is an important voice in our locker room when we need it, when we really need to lock in. So again, she’s an unrestricted free agent, so we look forward to having those conversations.

“Again, she had a really productive year and we’ll see just where things take us. I mean, obviously, it’s really, really early and we’ve got some time before we get to free agency.”

Cunningham will likely generate some interest from other teams around the league. She has proven her worth beyond what the stat sheets show. The 30-year-old is a solid defender who has made a name for herself as an on-court enforcer who has a lot of grit.
