When Your Plane Crashes And You’re The Sole Survivor

True Stories of Survival Against All Odds

The very phrase “plane crash” is enough to unsettle even the most confident traveler. It’s the ultimate fear of flying—the thought that a routine journey could turn into disaster in an instant.

That mix of tragedy and resilience is what inspired author Oliver McAslan’s book, The Day They Fell From the Sky: 10 Lone Survivors and Their Harrowing and Incredible True Stories of Plane Crash Survival.

McAslan, a registered nurse from New Zealand, writes with a sensitivity shaped by personal experience. His fascination with survival stories didn’t start in the air, but at sea. As a boy, he nearly lost his father when the cargo ship his dad captained began sinking in the South China Sea. Though the crew survived, the terror of that night stayed with him.

“That experience ingrained in me the fact that life is incredibly fragile,” McAslan recalled. “It shaped who I became, how I saw resilience, and even why I gravitated toward nursing. It also planted the seed for my writing.”

From Family Story to Aviation Survival

Version 1.0.0

At first, McAslan thought he’d write about his father’s ordeal. But as he studied publishing, mentors urged him to choose a subject with broader appeal. He turned instead to a long-time interest: aviation disasters and the rare individuals who survive them.

Growing up, McAslan devoured programs like Air Crash Investigations and Mayday. He was drawn not just to the mechanics of crashes but to the human side—how people endure the unendurable. His research uncovered lone-survivor stories from around the world, where one person outlived hundreds.

The result was The Day They Fell From the Sky, a collection of ten gripping accounts of survival against impossible odds.

Vesna Vulović: Falling 33,000 Feet

One of the most famous cases in McAslan’s book is that of Vesna Vulović, a Serbian flight attendant who still holds the world record for surviving the highest free fall without a parachute—over 33,000 feet.

In 1972, a bomb exploded aboard her flight, ripping the aircraft apart. Everyone else died, but Vulović survived. Investigators believe her body was pinned by a food cart inside a piece of fuselage that crash-landed in snow, softening the impact. She broke bones and suffered massive injuries, but her unusually low blood pressure may have prevented her heart from bursting on impact.

Though the world called her lucky, Vulović struggled with survivor’s guilt. She shied away from fame, reminding others that survival always comes with loss. Conspiracy theories swirled about her story, but she remained clear about what happened: she survived the impossible.

A Child Alone: The Miracle of Flight 255

Another heartbreaking account is that of four-year-old Cecilia Cichan, the only survivor of Northwest Airlines Flight 255, which crashed in Detroit in 1987.

The plane never gained enough lift because the pilots forgot to set its flaps and slats for takeoff. It stalled and fell seconds after leaving the runway, killing 156 people on board and others on the ground.

Rescuers found Cecilia among the wreckage, at first thinking she was a roadside victim. She was the sole survivor. Raised quietly by relatives, she didn’t speak publicly about the crash until adulthood. Even then, she admitted that survivor’s guilt followed her all her life. To honor her past, she later tattooed a small airplane on her wrist, a symbol of acceptance and healing.

For grieving families, her survival was bittersweet—a reminder of both loss and hope.

The Weight of Survival

McAslan’s book makes one thing clear: survival doesn’t end when the crash does. Those who live wrestle with trauma, physical scars, and the grief of losing everyone around them.

“Luck is part of it, but it doesn’t erase suffering,” McAslan said. “Many survivors carry invisible weight for the rest of their lives. Their resilience is not just in surviving the crash itself but in finding a way to live afterward.”

These stories prove that the human spirit is both fragile and unbreakable at the same time.

Back to His Father’s Ordeal

Although his first book focused on aviation, McAslan eventually wrote about his father’s shipwreck in his second book, The Day They Were Swept Away.

In 1994, while captaining his first ship, his father ordered the crew to abandon ship as water poured in. The first lifeboat failed, but they managed to get a second one into the water. For hours, they fought rough seas with no rescue in sight—until another ship finally saved them.

Years later, his father admitted he thought he’d die that night. For Oliver, hearing that fear from a man he’d always seen as strong was deeply moving. His father returned to sea just months later, working three more decades before retiring in 2022.

Preserving Stories of Resilience

For Oliver McAslan, writing is more than documenting disasters. It’s about honoring survival, remembering courage, and preserving legacies. His books balance detailed reporting with compassion, leaving readers inspired rather than merely shocked.

He isn’t stopping with planes and ships—his next project will focus on desert survival stories, continuing his quest to explore how people endure hostile, life-threatening conditions.

Both The Day They Fell From the Sky and The Day They Were Swept Away are available on Amazon, with the first also on audiobook. Readers can follow his projects on Facebook under the name “Olliemcas.”

McAslan’s work captures a powerful truth: even when disaster strikes, the will to live can shine through in extraordinary ways.
