Trump has claimed to be in talks with “the highest people in Cuba” and suggested the possibility of a “friendly takeover”. However, reports from independent news outlets suggest no high-level negotiations are actually occurring with the Díaz-Canel administration. The United Nations and Mexico have warned of a looming humanitarian catastrophe. China and Russia have pledged support to the Cuban government, while activists are organizing a “Nuestra América Flotilla” to attempt to break the blockade with humanitarian aid.
