More tiny canines in tiny Mesozoic-to-extant marsupials

Previously the so-called ‘double-tooted canine”
was reidentified here as a canine-like premolar that replaced the diminished to absent canine in timy extinct and extant mammals.

Today’s post
includes more examples of that evolutionary innovation (Fig 1), a reduced canine.

This academically overlooked trait
occurs at the base of the new clade ‘Akynodonta’ = ‘no canine tooth’.

Otherwise the taxa that form a clade that retains the original canine are here called ‘Kynodonta; = canine tooth. Yes, that is the plesiomorphic condition in Synapsida. See the large reptile tree (LRT, 2340 taxa) to understand this hypothesis of interrelationships.

If true = confirmed = modeling actual events,
one should expect to find a few transitional taxa in which the canine is more-or-less a vestige.

And that’s exactly what we do find (Fig 1).

Understanding patterns in mammal dentition
along with the recovery of four origins for the placenta are two keys to modeling a hypothesis of mammal interrelationships based on fossils and traits for 600 taxa in the LERT.

Lacking = overlooking these two keys may be the reason why prior paleontologists pushed away the skeletons and fossils they used to love in favor of genes they have to let others tell them what they mean.

Paleontologists put their trust in deep time genes
following proven success with recent genes.

Unfortunately testing has revealed the corruption of deep time genes that recover untenable hypothetical interrelationships that have been falsified by trait analysis = the LRT Trait analysis is the gold standard. Genes cannot be trusted and do not employ fossils.
