Tain Range WMO03062 – Another site disproving the Met Office’s own claims.

57.818876 -3.966785 Met Office CIMO Assessed Class 4 Installed 1/1/1989

Tain Range is a former RAF Airfield located in north east Scotland by Morrich More, a spit of the land to the North-West of Inver. The airfield was disused immediately after World War 2 (though still visible) and the area converted to a military bombing range variously under the control of the RAF and the RNAS. The fully equipped synoptic weather station here is another of those curiously marked down by the Met office as Class 4 that certainly appears much better located than very many others classed as much better.

When I originally started the Surface Stations project I really had no idea just how many former RAF airfields there were in the UK. Over 100 Met office weather stations are associated with airfields of different sorts and there are many more former military sites in various states of dereliction. This is the wider angle aerial image of Tain showing the vestigial remains of the classic RAF “A” Frame of runways allowing take off and landings in various wind directions.from the days of much less powerful aircraft than now.

The oddity here is that when the late Tim Channon originally reviewed this site, he considered it a straightforward Class 1. I opted to dig a bit deeper but there are few ground level images of sites on bombing ranges posted online! Initially from all the normal sources I use I could really not see any problems at all here. The location is extremely flat and there are almost no trees, buildings or even distant hills or mountains to cause angle shading problems. Tim had detailed a wide circled area with no immediate local effects and the ground cover is as natural as it possibly could be. There is no question of urbanisation in this sparsely populated area and even the military activities are very rare and readily accounted for. The screen is very remote from the disused runways and in its current format would never have been location-optimised for take off/landings.

It is very frustrating to not have even a basic ground view and in such circumstances I often trawl any private or corporate “Youtube” videos on the off chance there might be an unintended glimpse. Luckily, 423 (Speyside) DF Air Cadets visited the site for what seemed a jolly good time and obliged with a view I was able to capture at 34 seconds in.

This type of image is foreshortening considerably with the building foreground over 80 metres from the screen. The wind mast is the traditional substantial type deployed at airfields with the screen appearing to the right but actually some 13 metres further behind the mast in the large enclosure. This definitely confirms that there are no obvious problems with this site and leads me to endorse Tim’s original assessment of a rare Class 1 site.

This issue of low rating of such remote but open sites causes me to seriously question the consistency applied by the Met Office in their assessments. I find it quite absurd that sites like Heathrow and Chertsey with its solar farm can be rated as Class 3 and Cranwell is still rated as Class 2 (from most recent inspection of 14th July 2026) despite being alongside a huge diversion/settlement tank. None of these sites are as free from disrupting effects as Tain Range……and it certainly shows in the data.

A strong indication of the value of sites such as Tain Range is that they are so free from temperature contaminants that even the Met Office’s own data readily disproves a lot of their anthropogenic global warming claims. If atmospheric CO2 really is the climate control knob it is not able to dramatically discriminate between different sites in the UK. Any warming trend over time should be of the same order wherever measured being over such a small geographical area as the British Isles – variations should be relatively minor between sites.

So lets put that to the test. Alleged Class 3 Heathrow appears as a climate averages station.

Station: Heathrow

Climate period: 1991-2020

Month Maximum temperature (°C) Minimum temperature (°C) Days of air frost (days) Sunshine (hours) Rainfall (mm) Days of rainfall ≥1 mm (days) Monthly mean wind speed at 10 m (knots)
Annual 15.67 7.83 26.99 1674.81 614.98 111.66 7.31

Compare the above 1990 to 2020 with the 1960 to 1990 period below

Annual 14.46 6.73 40.53 1519.44 596.58 106.62

Thus Heathrow with one of the world’s busiest airports, within one of the world’s most intense Urban Heat Islands and that has massively expanded over years since its inception is showing 60 year increments in Mean Maximum of 1.21°C and an increase in Mean Minimum of 1.10°C. All of this neatly falls into line with the 1.5°C since pre-industrial AGW narrative.

Obviously Tain Range, in reality a Class 1 quality site in a remote location unaffected by urbanisation and with the airfield disused 80 years ago will show the same scale of warming because theory says it must.

Station: Tain Range

Climate period: 1991-2020

Month Maximum temperature (°C) Minimum temperature (°C) Days of air frost (days) Sunshine (hours) Rainfall (mm) Days of rainfall ≥1 mm (days) Monthly mean wind speed at 10 m (knots)
Annual 12.25 4.76 59.55 660.16 141.22 9.15

Climate period: 1961-1990

Annual 11.52 4.41 51.08 584.57 140.85

So there it is – Tain 60 year Mean Maximum increment is 0.73°C whilst Mean Minimum increment is just 0.35°C

For the benefit of the Met Office and to clearly spell it out – for maximums 1.21°C is very much more than 0.73°C and for minimums 1.1°C is hugely more than 0.35°C. Theses are not Ray Sanders’ figures they are yours.

The absolute proof that CO2 molecules discriminate in applying their “catastrophic effects” or (heaven forbid) could it be that some weather stations are better than others?

The Met Office has to be brought to account for their malpractices – it is blatantly obvious that the majority of their sites are completely unsuitable for the accurate recording of historic climate data and their own numbers prove it. But still they push the narrative – what happened to science?
