OTL: Another Lamar-ry Christmas?
From all of us here at Russell Street Report, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! For the second year running, Santa brought a Ravens gameday!
But before looking ahead to Baltimore’s date with Houston this evening, let’s take a quick look back at a major accomplishment for WR Zay Flowers last Saturday:
After his monster performance against the Steelers, Joystick Zay Flowers has finally joined a very exclusive club!
He became only the second 1st round WR drafted by the Baltimore Ravens to achieve a 1000 yard season with the team.

Flowers and the rest of the team spoke to what the Ravens/Steelers rivalry means to them, and it was awesome to see a gutsy performance against an opponent that seemed to have our number:
Zay Flowers on the “You’re not a Raven until you beat the Steelers” saying last week:
It just tells you how important the rivalry is and it tells you how important it is to the city and how important it is to the team. So, Imma become a Raven this week. I’m telling you I’m gonna… pic.twitter.com/4nBAoYLFSx

Going back to the BC product, I can’t remember ever feeling like the Ravens truly had one of the league’s best separators on their roster, and Flowers has proven he’s just that. What’s more, Rashod Bateman joined him in 2024 with a career year.
Fans can debate all they want about who WR1 is, but at the end of the day, Baltimore has an elite WR duo on its hands:

Still, heading into a matchup with the Texans off a short week will be tough, especially if Flowers and Nelson Agholor are unable to go:
Ravens injury report at Texans
-Good sign for WR Zay Flowers (questionable), who returned to practice after missing past 2 days
-RB Justice Hill and WR Nelson Agholor both ruled out with concussions.

With that in mind, I’m hopeful that a belated Christmas present from GM Eric DeCosta is a return for Odell Beckham, Jr.

After being let go by Miami, OBJ would be the perfect addition to a room that expected more from recently released (and picked up by Houston) WR Diontae Johnson. Beckham Jr. was a tremendous fit in Baltimore last season, despite not having the most impressive numbers. He clearly helped lead in the locker room and in my opinion would be an upgrade over Agholor as the third option.
Before I move on, though, I do want to play devil’s advocate against the receivers. While their performance and improvement has been a joy to watch, I do wonder how much of that improvement stems from the ridiculous season Derrick Henry and the rushing attack have had.
As we all know, Baltimore’s rushing offense has been heralded for years, especially with Jackson quarterbacking. But with King Henry in the fold, it’s been taken to a seemingly impossible level:
The 2019-23 #Ravens currently share the all-time record for most consecutive seasons with 4.75+ YPC (5) with the 1963-68 #Browns.
With 5.7 YPC in 2024 so far, they will extend their record to 6 seasons.
That encompasses every year Jackson has been the starter.#Ravensflock pic.twitter.com/KTINormyRI

This sort of threat forces defenses to lean into defending the run more than they ever have before, hence making the lives of Flowers, Bateman, and most importantly Jackson even easier. Again, I love what we’re seeing from the receiving group, but it’s worth noting.
Speaking of Jackson’s season, forget everything I just said as we continue to push our QBs third MVP candidacy. After the win against Pittsburgh, the Jackson vs. Allen debate is in full swing, with a number of opinions circulating on Christmas Eve:
Who do you think should win MVP this season? pic.twitter.com/jXxIxJ6cEm

“[Lamar Jackson] was always going to have those legs. … His arm is now 85-90 percent of what his legs are.” @ShannonSharpe makes the case for Lamar Jackson being the MVP favorite through Week 16. pic.twitter.com/lIisNoop0B

Craig Carton says the Lamar Jackson vs. Josh Allen MVP race is like Nikola Jokic vs. Joel Embiid where Embiid won

Regardless of what the media says, Lamar’s numbers don’t lie. And as pointed out by Mike Florio (a former Jackson hater), the 2x MVP has a chance to prove he’s deserving tonight:

Mike Florio, an MVP voter, with the most cogent take on the MVP voting process.
Voters don’t want to look dumb, betting odds can influence votes, and games late in the year on big stages matter.

Jackson’s opponent, Texans HC DeMeco Ryans, seems to have things right:
DeMeco Ryans weighs in on Lamar Jackson’s MVP candidacy:
“Definitely jumps off the tape as the best player I’ve seen this year. Talk about MVP. He’s definitely the MVP in my mind.” #RavensFlock

— Bobby Trosset (@bobbybaltim0re) December 23, 2024
MVP conversations aside, tonight’s game is critical for the Ravens, especially if Pittsburgh falls to KC in a few hours:
Here are the 3 paths for the #Ravens to win the AFCN:
1. Bal W both and Pit L either (or both)–Bal wins AFCN outright
2. Bal L to Hou, W vs Cle and Pit L to Cin (KC does not matter)–Bal wins AFCN by Div tiebreaker or outright
3. Bal W v Hou, L to Cle, and Pit L to both KC,…

It’s easy to get our hopes up after impressive showings fresh out of the BYE week, but the job is far from finished. If Jackson is going to bring a Super Bowl to Charm City this season, a win tonight would be a huge step in the right direction.
