Stout Surges, While Key Offensive Leaders Fall into the Red
Every week, the contributors here at Russell Street Report offer up predictions for the upcoming game. Here’s what I said last week:
Another uglyish game is possible. Not as bad as last week but a game that is uglier than it should be. Lamar’s injuries, no Rashod Bateman and maybe some kind of a trap game could make it closer than we think. I think the Ravens win easily but people walk away still a little frustrated with the offense.
Ravens 27 Jets 10
Not bad, huh? That’s essentially what we saw against the Jets. However, a win is a win, and the Ravens are now in first place, fighting all the way back from a 1-5 start. They obviously still have a lot of work to do but the next two games, for both Baltimore and Pittsburgh, will go a long way to determining the division winner.
Stock Up
Roquan Smith
After a slow start to the season, Roquan Smith is starting to play well. He has posted very good PFF grades in the last two weeks and is tackling well. He still isn’t where he was in 2023, but the improvement is there.
Keaton Mitchell
Keaton Mitchell’s biggest play yesterday was the run that was called back, but his explosiveness is clearly back. The Ravens have got to get the ball to him more. He can be a very important piece down the stretch. I would even go as far as saying he needs to be featured in more series and not just spelling Henry a snap here and there. He should be getting ten or so touches every game.
Jordan Stout
Jordan Stout tied a franchise record with a 74-yard punt and, according to Ryan Mink’s article on BR.com, his 61.5 yard average on his four punts was the 6th best in NFL history. He continues to be the most improved player on the team and has set himself up to get paid nicely this offseason.
Mike Green
Mike Green had four pressure, two sacks and the best PFF grade on the Ravens defense. He is getting more and more comfortable every week, and you are starting to see him really be an impact player out there. It was also the fewest snaps he’s played in weeks, so it’s nice to see the upgraded DL rotation keeping him fresh.
Teddye Buchanan
Teddye Buchanan has really stepped up as the season has gone along. He had some struggles early but he has gained experience and appears to have learned a lot. He still will get lost in zone coverage and he still has some growth to do but the game is getting better and he is becoming more of a positive on defense every week.
Stock Down
Todd Monken’s Adjustments
I feel that fans have given coaches all the grief this year while ignoring the play and execution of the players (except Daniel Faalele, fans give it to him!). The players have talked about the lack of execution all year. First it was the defense talking about it and now the offense is. That being said, Todd Monken could be doing more. He could have Lamar throwing quicker, like the Minnesota game. He could have them go more no huddle, trying to get a good rhythm going (that’s an offense Lamar has always done well operating). And, as I mentioned earlier, he has to get Mitchell more involved. This isn’t all his fault, but it just doesn’t feel like he’s doing everything he can to put players in the best positions to succeed. The offense has been good under him before, so its not like he can’t figure it out. But if he was saving anything for these crucial division games, it’s time to unleash it.
Lamar Jackson
Lamar Jackson is clearly not healthy. His stats show it and your eyes see it. He’s had hamstring, knee, and ankle injuries, and the latest is a toe. He doesn’t have any explosion. His passes are off. He isn’t winning one-on-ones in the open field. He isn’t escaping as well. They need early-season Lamar to show up. He hasn’t passed for even 200 yards in three straight weeks.
Derrick Henry
Derrick Henry has been subpar the last three weeks. Yes, he had 103 yards against Cleveland, but 59 of that came on one carry. He only had 44 yards on 17 carries otherwise. I know he has faced some good run defenses and the line isn’t helping but his last three games, taking out that one long run, he is averaging about 3.2 yards per carry. He has to be better than that.
Kickoff Coverage
The Jets had several good kickoff returns. If John Harbaugh is doing to dedicate game day roster space to special teams players, they need those units to be really good. They have bounced back to be an excellent unit overall this year but against better teams, giving them that type of field position will hurt you. That has to get buttoned up.
