Bears star throws shade at coaching staff after frustrating loss to Lions

Jaquan Brisker, Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears still clinched the No. 2 seed in the NFC on Sunday, but they didn’t do it the way they wanted.

Instead of the Bears nailing down the 2-seed with a win, they had to rely on a Philadelphia Eagles loss, as Chicago fell to the Detroit Lions by a score of 19-16 in its regular-season finale.

The Bears fell behind 16-0 in the affair and rallied to tie the game in the second half, much like Chicago has been doing throughout the campaign. This time, though, the Bears were unable to close the deal, and safety Jaquan Brisker was left feeling frustrated afterward.

In fact, he appeared to throw some shade at the coaching staff.

“We were playing a whole bunch of man today,” Brisker told reporters. “No help in the middle. Lot of picks and rubs. Really, they schemed us up, and we had to do a better job covering. They just got us in the right call. They just out schemed us, just being honest.”

You can’t help but feel that was a shot at defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, who is in his first year with the Bears.

The Chicago Bears’ defense has been a problem all season

It seems rather odd to complain about Chicago’s defense on a day where it only surrendered 19 points. However, the Bears coughed up 433 total yards to a Lions team that was playing for nothing other than bragging rights on Sunday.

Chicago finished the year ranked 29th in defense, and while injuries certainly played a role, there is also no question that the Bears’ defense underperformed in 2025.

Brisker himself had a rough season. While he registered 93 tackles, a sack, an interception and eight passes defended, he struggled in coverage all year, notching a 46.4 coverage grade at Pro Football Focus. That placed him 86th among 98 qualifying safeties.

The 26-year-old is in his fourth season with Chicago and is slated to hit free agency this offseason. Based on shoddy he has been in coverage last couple of years, it seems rather likely that the Bears — who are strapped for cash — will allow Brisker to walk in the spring.

Chicago will host the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs next Saturday.
