Former Chicago Cubs All-Star pitcher could announce retirement soon

Oct 2, 2020; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Yu Darvish (center) leaves the game during the seventh inning in game two of a Wild Card playoff baseball game against the Miami Marlins at Wrigley Field.

The Chicago Cubs have made a couple of aggressive moves to round out their roster for the upcoming season.

The Cubs’ trade for Alex Bregman will help the team at one of their weaker spots last season, third base. Chicago also traded for pitcher Edward Cabrera to add depth to the rotation for 2026, another issue the team had during their run to the NLDS.

On Saturday, a former Cubs pitcher revealed he could retire from the MLB after a long and storied career.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported San Diego Padres pitcher Yu Darvish is set to retire before the 2026 campaign.

Darvish, 39, has three years and $43 million remaining on his contract. He told Acee he wasn’t worried about leaving money on the table.

“As far as leaving lots of money,” Darvish said, “I look at it as that was never mine to begin with, especially considering the money I haven’t physically earned yet.”

On Saturday, Darvish provided an update after the article was published. He claimed he wanted to rehab his elbow to see he can get to the point he throw in the league again. If he cannot, he plans to announce his retirement.

“You may have seen an article, and although I am leaning towards voiding the contract, there’s still a lot that has to be talked over with the Padres so the finer details are yet to be decided,” Darvish posted on X. “Also I will not be announcing my retirement yet.

“Right now I am fully focused on my rehab for my elbow, and if I get to a point where I can throw again, I will start from scratch again to compete. If once I get to that point I feel I can’t do that, I will announce my retirement.”

Darvish started his MLB career with the Texas Rangers in 2012.  The Cubs signed the ace to a six-year, $126 million contract in 2018.

In 2020, the Cubs traded Darvish and personal catcher Víctor Caratini to the Padres for pitcher Zach Davies and prospects Owen Caissie, Reginald Preciado, Yeison Santana, and Ismael Mena. (Caissie didn’t work out with Chicago and was used to help the Cubs land Cabrera.)

Darvish was a five-time All-Star nominee but never made an appearance as a member of the Cubs. He earned First-Team All-MLB honors with Chicago in 2020 when he was the leader in wins for the National League.

Darvish’s last game came against the Cubs. He was the losing pitcher for the Padres in Game 3 of the NLWC. He gave up two earned runs on four hits in one inning (ERA of 18.00) of the Cubs’ 3-1 win.
