Chicago Bears, Colston Loveland

Chicago Bears rookie tight end Colston Loveland showed his appreciation for teammate, veteran guard Joe Thuney. The Bears star center is up for the inaugural Protector of the Year Award. This award is an acknowledgment by the NFL for the hard work and significant contributions that offensive linemen give to their respective teams.

The former Michigan Wolverines took to social media to share a Bears social media post announcing Thuney as one of the finalists for the inaugural honor. This is a historic achievement for Thuney, who has been named as one of the finalists for the first-ever Protector of the Year Award.

Thuney was drafted 78th overall by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He was in the starting lineup of the Bears’ 17 regular-season games. The four-time Pro Bowler did not allow a single sack. He also managed to stop all QB hits except one, gave up 15 total pressures and committed only two penalties.

Thuney is one of the six candidates on the finalist list. He joins Denver Broncos offensive tackle Garett Bolles, Miami Dolphins center Aaron Brewer, Kansas City Chiefs center Creed Humphrey, Broncos offensive guard Quinn Meinerz and Detroit Lions offensive tackle Penei Sewell as inaugural nominees for the prestigious award.

This season is Thuney’s first with the Bears. He played for the Patriots for five years and for the Kansas City Chiefs for four years.

Loveland, for his part, had a memorable rookie season with the Bears after overcoming a sluggish start that included a hip injury in Week 3. That forced him to miss the first NFL game of his career in Week 4 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Drafted 10th overall in the 1st round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Loveland ended his first NFL season with 58 catches for 713 yards and six touchdowns. He will be staying with the Bears for another three seasons and has an option for a potential fifth year.

The Bears finished with an 11-6 record in the regular season. They defeated the Green Bay Packers 31-27 in the wild card round. However, they lost to the Los Angeles Rams 20-17 in the Divisional Round.
