OTL: Cold & Calculating Minter Just What the Ravens Need
It was a momentous day for us, Ravens Flock. Thursday the Ravens introduced Jessie Minter as the next Head Coach.
We are going to go through the key points that stood out in Minter’s opening press conference. Obviously it was a monumental day for the Ravens, and there were two huge takeaways from this press conference. Regarding the conference itself, it was somewhat light. If you expected the same openness and truthfulness that Steve Bisciotti provided a couple of weeks ago, then you likely came away disappointed. It wasn’t bad, but Minter was very calculated in his answers and didn’t provide specifics when answering certain questions.
Of course, Minter himself seems very calculated and calm, so this is his approach. He didn’t give the funny quotes that new Buffalo Head Coach Joe Brady did in his presser, and that is fine.
With that said, the new number one question I had going in was this: would Minter himself call plays from the sideline?:
Jesse Minter: “I do plan on calling the defense. I think that’s a strength of mine. I think that’s one of the reasons I’m here.”

Yes please. This is what the Ravens needed right here. They needed a leader on one or the other sides of the ball to be engaged with the team when they play. We don’t want to keep bringing up John Harbaugh’s tenure like a jaded ex, but the difference will be night and day. We didn’t need another CEO who would just not get in the way; the Baltimore Ravens needed innovation and a guy who could lead a team on his side of the ball.
Furthermore, Minter laid out his vision for the team.
Minter: “When people turn on our film. I want them to see a team that’s well connected.”

An interesting choice of words, as “disconnected” would be an accurate way to explain what has gone wrong for the Ravens over the last couple of years. How many times have we seen defenders pointing at one another after allowing a big play or touchdown? How many times have they seemed to be lined up exactly how the opposing offense WANTED them before the snap? How many playoff games have we watched where mistakes are constantly made and nothing good happens? How many times has there seemingly been a disconnect between how the scouts and front office viewed a player and how the coaching staff did?
In those moments, the Ravens never felt connected or well-coached. They were instead like watching Murphy’s Law in action: in a critical moment, you knew that the Ravens were going to make a huge blunder. Now, when Jesse talks about wanting a team that is connected and plays together as a unit, that calming nature he presents takes over.
Minter wasn’t as open a book as Steve is, nor did he quip funny lines like Joe Brady, but he did give us optimism that he is the right man to lead this team into the next crucial era. The pressure is on for the Ravens to get Lamar Jackson to a Super Bowl, finally, and maybe Minter’s calming nature is what they need the most. At this moment, I have no doubt that the Ravens made the correct call in hiring him, and if his staff thus far is any indication, he will nail the coordinator spots as well. The Ravens are in good hands with Jesse Minter.
