The Chicago Bears had a decision to make at left tackle before playing the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round.

Starting left tackle Ozzy Trapilo suffered a ruptured patellar tendon in the final drive of the Bears’ 31-27 win over the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round. Even with Braxton Jones and Theo Benedet practicing, Chicago chose to bump left guard Joe Thuney to left tackle to play the Rams.

Both Jones and Benedet were set to enter free agency after the season.

The Bears have made a choice on one of them.

Per Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic, Chicago signed Benedet, a restricted free agent, to a one-year deal worth $1 million for 2026.

“Quick Bears roster note: Theo Benedet, who was an ERFA, is signed for 2026 (one year, $1M),” Fishbain posted on X. “Benedet, a college RT, had never played a snap at LT before training camp. Started 8 games. Finished 4th in ESPN’s run block win rate among OTs. Now gets a full offseason to train at LT.”

Theo Benedet gives the Chicago Bears some wiggle room

Signing Benedet gives the Bears some wiggle room while they decide how to attack the left tackle position next season. Trapilo is not expected to start at the beginning of the regular season.

Signing Benedet likely means the Bears aren’t going to keep Jones, a fifth-round pick in 2022. Jones played in 46 games and started 44 games. He started in four games in 2025 before suffering a knee injury.

Jones was promoted from injured reserve before the Divisional Round, but the Bears opted not to start the left tackle.

Even with Benedet, Chicago could make left tackle a top priority in the offseason. ESPN’s Courtney Cronin recently suggested general manager Ryan Poles would prioritize that position over adding a defensive lineman, either in free agency or the draft.

“I think that the idea that pass rush is the most important priority for this team this offseason, I think it’s changed a little bit, because we will judge Ryan Poles most harshly on what happens with the offensive line at left tackle,” Cronin said.

“I think that that changed what the priority number one has to be in the offseason. Because the rest of the offensive line is set. You have continuity, you have stability. You cannot allow the left tackle spot to be a revolving door. And I don’t think the answer is on the roster.”

Benedet will have a chance to start for a starting job in Week 1. He joined the Bears in 2024 as an undrafted free agent out of UBC.
