Chicago Bears lose 39-game defensive starter in NFL free agency

Chicago Bears, Andrew Billings

The Chicago Bears defense may have led the NFL in turnovers forced in 2025, but they were by no means a dominating unit. They still ranked near the bottom of the league in yards and points allowed per game. As such, general manager Ryan Poles said that many changes would be happening on that side of the ball.

With those changes, though, comes the departure of multiple defensive starters. Already, the Bears have seen the entire starting safety room and Pro Bowl cornerback sign elsewhere.

Now, they also are bidding adieu to one of their starting defensive linemen.

Earlier today, it was reported that Andrew Billings, who started 39 games for the Bears over the last three seasons, has signed with the Arizona Cardinals in NFL free agency:

Billings was originally drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. He did not make his NFL debut, though, until 2017. After four seasons there (he sat out in 2020 due to COVID-19), he spent one year apiece with the Cleveland Browns and Las Vegas Raiders.

In three seasons with Chicago, Billings amassed 71 total tackles and 2.0 sacks.

While Billings may not have been expected back per say, his departure highlights the fact that the Bears need to address their defensive line this off-season.

Not only did they give up a great deal of passing yards and points, but they also ranked near the bottom of the league in quarterback pressures and sacks.

It will be interesting to see what moves Poles has up his sleeves to address this.
