Danny Palencia is expected to be the closer for Team Venezuela throughout the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Starting off pool play with a 1-0 record is important in these five-team pools, as the top two teams in each pool advance to the quarterfinals. In a pool with the Dominican Republic, getting wins against the other three teams is essential for Venezuela to stay alive in the tournament.
Palencia would come in to close out the game for Team Venezuela in the ninth inning and he got the job done. Even though it was not a save situation, being a 6-2 lead, he would finish off Team Netherlands. Palencia would start his outing off with a pair of strikeouts to Druw Jones and Jakey Josepha before hitting Ceddanne Rafaela with a pitch. With a runner on first and two outs, he would force Xander Bogaerts to line out to shortstop to end the game.
Palencia would throw 14 pitches during the outing, 10 of them being strikes. Since he pitched fewer than 20 pitches, he is eligible to pitch again tomorrow against Team Israel. It was a sharp outing for the Cubs reliever, but it will be intriguing to see when he is back on the mound in this World Baseball Classic.
