Chicago Bears: Ben Johnson admits team made major blunder with D-line
The Chicago Bears had a clear problem with the defensive line last season.

The Bears had the No. 31 out of 32 league teams in pass rush win rate, winning 29% of their pass rushes. Chicago’s 35 sacks were tied for the 22nd-best.
Chicago failed to address the defensive line until it selected Georgia Tech defensive tackle Jordan van den Berg in the sixth round.
On Friday night, general manager Ryan Poles defended the decision to stay true to whatever board the Bears had built instead of picking for position. He suggested on Thursday night that the team had plenty of talent on the roster with Dayo Odeyingbo returning with Montez Sweat.
Poles believes the coaching staff will get more out of the team in the upcoming season.
That was the answer head coach Ben Johnson gave during his news conference on Saturday. He suggested the coaching staff made a major blunder last season by not coaching the defensive line well. He believes Odeyingbo and defensive tackle Shemar Turner were making progress before suffering season-ending injuries.
“We’re certainly going to coach better than what we did a year ago,” Johnson said. “It starts there. We’ve made a concerted effort with how we’re going to get that done… Sweat had one of his better years in the NFL, whether that shows up in the sack total or not.
“He’s a very complete player, both run game and pass game. And you saw tremendous growth from Booker when we were able to get him back as well. The combination of us being able to coach better and those guys taking the next step as part of this system, we’ve got some pretty good pieces to work with.”

Johnson didn’t give concrete details on how defensive coordinator Dennis Allen and his staff would coach the defensive line better, though he thinks getting to the passer will be emphasized more.
“Well, it’s the deal when you’re a first-year staff, not everything’s gonna look the way you want it to look… But for us on offense and defense, you look at the self-scout and it doesn’t look the way we want it to look. And so to me, that’s a reflection of coaching,” Johnson said.
“We made a concerted effort on both sides of the ball there to make sure that we’re gonna get it to look more the way that we want it to look. That’s natural. I don’t think Year One, when I was a first-year play-caller, did it look the way it looked Year Two or Year Three. That’s natural, that’s how you get better.”
Why the Bears didn’t emphasize the pass rush in Year 1 is unclear. Hopefully, the coaching staff cooks up a remedy they can better articulate before the season.
