Chicago Bears: Ben Johnson explains why 2026 team is better

There is a new debate surrounding the Chicago Bears following the 2026 NFL Draft.

Did the Bears get better than they were last year?

Chicago lost several key pieces from the team that won the NFC North championship and defeated the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round.

Center Drew Dalman retired. Wide receiver DJ Moore was traded to the Buffalo Bills. Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds signed with the New York Giants. Safety Kevin Byard III signed with the New England Patriots. Cornerback Nahshon Wright, a turnover machine last season, signed with the New York Jets.

The Bears had a relatively quiet free agency. Safety Coby Bryant was their most notable addition. Linebacker Devin Bush and defensive tackle Neville Gallimore could play key roles.

Chicago entered the draft needing a safety, left tackle, center, defensive end, and defensive tackle. The Bears added safety Dillon Thieneman, center Logan Jones, and defensive tackle Jordan van den Berg.

Van den Berg was a sixth-round pick, so the Bears still have more questions than answers about the pass rush.

More News: Bears TE Cole Kmet’s future now in doubt

During his news conference on Saturday, Bears head coach Ben Johnson explained why he thinks the team is better set up for success in 2026.

“I’m going to start with continuity with the coaching staff because I really do think the ability for us, a group of guys, a lot of whom we hadn’t coached together before, looking to unify that vision and bring it to life the way we did last fall,” Johnson said.

“I know we really refined and made it a big effort here this springtime already to get the fundamentals, the techniques to another level in terms of how we’re teaching it and how we’re coaching it. I think it really starts there, at least from my lens. I think we’ll be better teachers of not only the scheme but also just the vision of what we want our brand of football to look like.”

Johnson believes that the additions the Bears made this offseason will create competition, which could make those areas stronger.

While that may be the case, the Bears still have weaknesses at some of the most important positions in the NFL. Johnson and his staff will have a lot to overcome if Chicago is going to compete for a Super Bowl.
