Chicago Bears urged to sign 7x Pro Bowl pass rusher after ignoring position in 2026 NFL Draft
The Chicago Bears entered the 2026 NFL Draft with a plethora of needs they had to address. Among these was their secondary, and they spent their first round pick on Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman. They also used a fourth round pick on cornerback Malik Muhammad, a player many considered to be one of the best value selections in the NFL Draft.
However, one need that they did not address was their pass rush. While they did take interior defensive lineman Jordan van den Berg in the sixth round, they failed to add a defensive end to pair with Montez Sweat.
The Chicago Bears could sign Calais Campbell in free agency
The Bears’ pass rush was, in a word, disappointing in 2025 and their run defense was not much better. One player that is still a free agent that could help them is seven-time Pro Bowler Calais Campbell.
Max Dible of Heavy wrote, “Campbell could help the Bears meaningfully in both regards, and do so at a reasonable price without a longterm commitment. Chicago is liable to improve the defensive line in next year’s draft after lacking interest in the available depth in 2026 at positions of legitimate team need.”
Though 40 years old, Campbell still was an excellent player in 2025. He had 6.5 sacks a year ago and has not missed a game since 2022. He may not be the perennial Pro Bowler that he once was, but he is still a viable option for pass rush-needy teams like Chicago.
What is more, Campbell played for the Arizona Cardinals last season under Jonathan Gannon, now the defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers. Adding him could give the Bears a bit of insight into their new rival.
The question, though, is whether or not the Bears can afford him. He is projected to get an $11 million deal for one year, and Chicago would need to work out some restructures to make that happen.
