Chicago Bears, Dexter Lawrence

The Chicago Bears are mourning the death of former linebackers coach Dave McGinnis.

The Bears confirmed the tragic news on Wednesday via the team’s website. According to the report, McGinnis passed away on Monday in Tennessee at the age of 74. He reportedly died of an illness after being hospitalized in March.

McGinnis’ coaching career spanned 44 years. He served as a linebackers coach for Chicago from 1986 to 1995. The Bears were McGinnis’ first NFL team after stints with multiple college programs. This includes Missouri, Indiana State and Kansas State, to name a few.

The Bears issued an official statement on the passing of their former long-time coach.

Bears chairman George McCaskey addressed the news in an official statement.

“Dave was a man of principle and unquestioned integrity, and a darn good football coach,” said McCaskey. “Those of us who were fortunate to be around him knew that any time spent with Coach Mac was going to be a good time. We will miss him. Our condolences to his family.”

McGinnis left the Bears in 1995. He joined the Arizona Cardinals as their defensive coordinator. McGinnis was later promoted to head coach in 2000.

McGinnis was involved in a controversial turn of events during his time with the Cardinals. During the 1999 offseason, he interviewed with the Bears for the head coaching position. At that time, he was still on Arizona’s coaching staff.

The then-team president, Michael McCaskey, prematurely announced McGinnis as the new Bears head coach, even though McGinnis had not officially signed a contract with Chicago. This ultimately led McGinnis to decline the position and withdraw his name from the list of candidates.

The Bears eventually hired Dick Jauron, while McGinnis never got the opportunity to reunite with the organization. After his time with the Cardinals, McGinnis also had stints with the Tennessee Titans and the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams.
