Chicago Cubs place All-Star lefty on IL ahead of the Rays series
The Chicago Cubs’ starting rotation took a hard hit to begin April, as two starting pitchers found their way onto the injured list.

Losing right-hander Cade Horton due to forearm discomfort on Friday, the Cubs will also be without left-hander Matthew Boyd. According to Meghan Montemurreo of the Chicago Tribune, Boyd was placed on the 15-day injured list on Monday with a left bicep strain.
To take Boyd’s place on the active roster, the Cubs recalled right-hander Javier Assad from Triple-A Iowa. Assad will start for the Cubs on Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays in place of the 2025 All-Star.
In his two starts before heading to the injured list, Boyd went 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA while walking three and striking out 17 in 9.1 innings.

Since joining the Iowa Cubs Assad has struggled. In two starts, Assad posted a 9.00 ERA and allowed seven earned runs (eight total) in seven innings. However, the 28-year-old did have a great spring, posting a 1.35 ERA in three games. The Cubs ultimately optioned Assad to Triple-A due to not having a spot in either the starting rotation or bullpen.
A decent big league pitcher, the Cubs need will Assad to give them quality innings until Boyd returns. Assad will likely make at least two starts while Boyd recovers from his injury.
