Chicago Cubs place another pitcher on IL; designate Dylan Carlson for assignment as Seiya Suzuki returns

The Chicago Cubs are 6-6 on the season, making them the only team in the National League Central Division without a winning record. Indeed, it has been an up-and-down season early for Chicago, one that has been marred with numerous injuries to key players.

Most notably, the Cubs recently placed Matthew Boyd, their Opening Day starter, on the injured list. The good news there, though, is that he is not expected to be out long. However, Cade Horton, arguably their best pitcher, is out for the year.

Now, Chicago is scrambling to tread water while their roster stabilizes itself.

Unfortunately, the Cubs are placing another pitcher on the injured list. Phil Maton, who has a 13.50 ERA through five games, is headed to IL with right knee tendonitis:

As one can see from the Jesse Rogers post above, Chicago has also designated Dylan Carlson for assignment. This move is happening because Seiya Suzuki, who has been out with a knee injury, is returning to the Cubs lineup. Carlson did not record a hit in four at bats with the Cubs this year.

In an effort to replace Maton on the Major League roster, the Cubs are calling up Ethan Roberts. He has already appeared in one game for the Cubs already this year, throwing a scoreless two-thirds of an inning.

In 41 career games, Roberts is 2-2 and has a 4.91 ERA.
