Chicago Sky trade for WNBA MVP candidate ahead of 2026 draft
The Chicago Sky have been extremely active throughout the offseason in improving the team. With all of the moves they have made, the roster seemingly is better than the 10-34 record they finished with last season. On Sunday, the Sky has agreed to a player-for-player trade. Let’s take a closer look at who it is and what it means for Chicago going forward.
The Chicago Sky traded for Rickea Jackson
The Sky continues to make moves as ESPN’s Alexa Philippou is reporting they have agreed to a trade with the Los Angeles Sparks. Chicago is acquiring forward Rickea Jackson in exchange for guard Ariel Atkins. There is no other draft compensation being exchanged, making this a rare player-for-player trade. This is considered a sign-and-trade, with Atkins receiving a multi-year contract from the Sparks.
Jackson gives the Sky more size in their frontcourt to replace Angel Reese. Jackson is coming off finishing ninth in the WNBA MVP voting and has shown the ability to dominate. In two years with the Sparks, she is averaging 14.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 0.6 steals per game. Giving up Atkins is a massive blow, as she has proven to be a defensive powerhouse, but this trade allows Chicago to get younger and have an outstanding talent.
Jackson has the 2026 season under contract before a team option in 2027. Chicago made Atkins part of their core players with the designation that was placed on her. However, general manager Jeff Pagliocca decided to move on from her after one season. The frontcourt for Chicago appears to be shaping up quite well ahead of the WNBA Draft. It will be intriguing to see how the team continues to address some weaknesses in the roster before the regular season.
