Chicago White Sox: Munetaka Murakami gives fans something to hope for
The Chicago White Sox are 7-14 so far this season, tied for the worst record in Major League Baseball. Once again, the team is on pace to have over 100 losses, a dubious “accomplishment” they have “achieved” in each of the past three seasons. Their Opening Day starter, Shane Smith, has been demoted to Triple-A after an awful start to the year. Indeed, not much of anything is going right in Chicago.
For long suffering White Sox fans, they were not expecting to suddenly be competitive in 2026. However, they were hoping that the young South Side team would show at least some semblance of improvement.
It has not. That being said, there is one player that has been giving fans something to hope for: Munetaka Murakami.

MLB.com recently published an article in which they gave one early-season development to believe in for each Major League team. For Chicago, the choice was clear:
“The White Sox became an international brand almost immediately from the time the first baseman from Japan agreed to a two-year, $34 million deal. That attention has grown stronger across Major League Baseball and beyond, with Murakami showing his talent with the bat is elite.
“He has started more as a three-true-outcomes sort of player: home runs, walks and strikeouts. But there’s so much more there for the focused, hard-working talent, as evidenced by his 431-foot grand slam against the Athletics on Friday.”
While MLB teams were looking into signing Murakami, many were scared away by his high strikeout numbers. However, the White Sox believed that he has the potential to be a player cut from the same cloth as Kyle Schwarber.
