Cubs’ outfielder on 2026 Opening Day roster rejoins organization after release
Breaking camp on the Chicago Cubs Opening Day roster was outfielder Dylan Carlson. A PCL sprain to Seiya Suzuki opened up the opportunity for Carlson, but upon Suzuki’s return he was designated for assignment. Carlson initially elected to test free agency, rather than report to Triple-A Iowa, but now has returned to the club on a minor league deal.
Dylan Carlson rejoins Chicago Cubs organization after release

After spending four days on the open market, per Carlson’s MLB transaction page, he has elected to return to the Cubs. This doesn’t mean he didn’t have opportunities to sign elsewhere, but often these veteran players sign with the team where they feel they have a path to the big leagues.
For Carlson, he will join Kevin Alcantara and Justin Dean as outfield options on the Triple-A roster who are on the 40-man roster. Alcantara is off to a scorching hot start at the plate, hitting seven home runs over his first 17 games, but is striking out at a 37.5% clip, which is one big weakness in his game. On the other hand, Dean’s strength is of base running, as he is one of the fastest players on the games, but doesn’t have an offensive profile with much upside as getting on base can be an issue for him.
In the end, Carlson’s decision to return to the Cubs organization speaks to where he believes his best opportunity lies. Rather than chasing an uncertain role elsewhere, he’s betting on familiarity, organizational fit, and a clearer path back to the big leagues. He received just four at-bats this year with Chicago, going hitless in all of his opportunities.
Among the depth of the current Triple-A outfield options, Carlson gives himself a realistic chance to factor into the conversation as the season unfolds, making his return less about comfort and more about calculated opportunity.
