Colin Cowherd discusses why the Chicago Bears not drafting a defensive end is a good thing
The Chicago Bears raised some eyebrows with their decisions in the 2026 NFL Draft. While they had a major need for an edge rusher, the team failed to draft one. There are a myriad of reasons as to why they could’ve made this decision. From not having one they loved available, looking at free agents, or liking who they have, Chicago made the decision to use one of their six draft picks for the position. One major sports commentator explained the decision and why he’s perfectly okay with the team making this choice.
Colin Cowherd is okay with the Chicago Bears not drafting an edge rusher

While on The Herd, Colin Cowherd explained how he likes that Ryan Poles and the front office didn’t draft a defensive end.
“Would I have preferred they drafted a defensive end or a rush end? Absolutely. But Howie Roseman says this all the time, he’s the GM of Philadelphia and he’s considered the best GM in the league. He always says, ‘if I went into the draft and filled every hole, we probably didn’t have a good draft.’ Why? Because you didn’t stick to the process, you didn’t stick to the board.”
Chicago elected to use four of their six selections in the draft on the defensive side of the ball. This could mean the Bears are comfortable with the likes of Montez Sweat and Dayo Odeyingbo rushing the quarterback. This also could mean they are interested in one of the veteran pass-rushers still free agents after the Compensatory Pick Deadline is officially past. Below is a list of available free agent edge rushers that the Bears could sign if they are looking for an addition there:
- Haason Reddick
- Joey Bosa
- Leonard Floyd
- Von Miller
- Cameron Jordan
- Dante Fowler Jr.
- Kyle Van Noy
- Jadeveon Clowney
According to Over The Cap, the Bears are sitting with just under $10.8 million in available cap space for the 2026 season. They have the space to make additions before training camp and could do that. There is also the chance they like who they have, and the improved secondary will give the team more time to get to the quarterback. It will be intriguing to see as we get closer to training camp if a move is made.
