Curveball Draft Targets for the Bears
With the draft quickly approaching, most projections have the Chicago Bears targeting an offensive or defensive lineman in the first round. That’s the safe expectation, but the NFL Draft rarely plays out exactly as planned. Every year, teams pivot based on how the board falls, and by the time the Bears are on the clock at pick 25, the options could look completely different. That unpredictability is part of what makes the draft so fun to follow, especially for fans tracking it in real time or using the best live betting apps to react as picks come in. If Chicago does go off script, there are a few intriguing directions they could take with their first-round selection.
Colton Hood: CB, Tennessee
With Nashon Wright leaving for the Jets in free agency, the Bears have a clear need at corner. Their secondary created plenty of turnovers last season, but still ranked 22nd in passing yards allowed per game. With Jermod McCoy sidelined, Hood stepped into a larger role and emerged as Tennessee’s top corner, showing he can handle being the go-to option on the outside. Hood’s stock seems to be rising, and his teammate McCoy’s seems to be falling due to lingering injury concerns. Either one would be a great fit for the Bears, even though corner isn’t the expected position for them to target this early.
Omar Cooper Jr.: WR, Indiana
Taking a wide receiver in the first round would be a bit of a surprise for the Bears, given the more pressing needs on the roster. It feels more likely they address the position later, but they still need to replace the production lost in the DJ Moore trade. The case for going WR early comes down to how much they’ve prioritized the position around Caleb Williams. They’ve already invested heavily in Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III, and if they view Cooper as the final piece to a high-end trio, it could justify the pick at 25. He has the versatility to line up in the slot or outside, and his physicality after the catch stands out. In a lot of ways, he profiles as a younger, more cost-controlled version of Moore with room to grow.
Dillon Thieneman: S, Oregon
Going back to the secondary, the Bears lost both starting safeties in free agency, with Kevin Byard III heading to New England and Jaquan Brisker going to Pittsburgh. That leaves a major gap on the back end. Caleb Downs is widely viewed as the top safety in this class, but Thieneman stands out as one of the more intriguing options behind him. A standout combine helped boost his draft stock, and his size gives him the flexibility to line up in multiple spots. Adding a versatile young piece like that would go a long way in rebuilding a secondary that lost key contributors this offseason.
