Chicago Cubs, Moises Ballesteros

Catcher/designated hitter Moises Ballesteros has been a revelation for the Chicago Cubs this season. The 22-year-old has produced at the plate, batting .367 with a 1.010 OPS, three home runs and 11 RBI in 21 games.

Ballesteros has been one aspect of an elite Cubs offense, which is third in baseball in hitting (.259).

Ballesteros has settled in and earned his teammates’ respect for his production. Some have even asked him for advice on how to attack pitchers.

“I feel excited to be learning from all the players. And I feel the respect from the older players,” Ballesteros said to MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian. “I feel excited when older players ask me like, ‘Hey, what would you do with this guy?’ Here, it’s more like a family. Every guy is together. Everyone – the veteran guys, the younger guys – they’re meshing with each other.”

Ballesteros drew a key walk with the bases loaded on Tuesday in the Cubs’ 7-4 win after pinch-hitting for infielder Matt Shaw. Ballesteros is hitting .375 batting average and 1.045 OPS when substituting.

Ballesteros is a natural catcher. However, he also plays first base (two games last season) and is the Cubs’ primary designated hitter (18 games this year). It’s unorthodox to carry three catchers on the roster, but Ballesteros’s hitting makes it a smart decision.

The trio of Ballesteros, Carson Kelly (.310/.886), and Miguel Amaya (.220/.650) has proven to be effective. Kelly, like Ballesteros has played first base and offers an option to replace Michael Busch. Busch has gotten off to a slow start this season, hitting .188 with a .525 OPS.
